Heartgard Prescriptions -- Why do I need one?

Q: Why do dogs need to be blood tested before being put on a heartworm preventative medicine (like Heartgard)?

A: Before beginning a preventive heartworm program, all dogs that could possibly be infected with mature heartworms should be tested. Giving heartworm preventives to dogs that have heartworms can cause harmful or even fatal reactions to the dog.

Depending on the severity of the infestation and which preventive is being used would determine the severity of the reaction. The rapid kill off of large numbers of microfilaria in the blood steam is what causes this type of reaction.

Puppies under seven months old can be put on heartworm preventives without first being tested, because it can take up to six months after being bitten by infected mosquitoes before the dog will test positive.

Puppies should be tested four to seven months after starting on a heartworm preventive in order to detect any infection acquired during the first few months of life.
